Operating motor vehicles is a privilege that not everyone is allowed to have. Despite this exclusivity, thoughtless motorists fail to exercise good judgment, and choose to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even both. With such an utter abandonment for their own safety, motorists who choose to impair their judgment before driving have not taken into account the safety of those around them in the slightest. Truck drivers are no exception to this rule.

Deemed with the responsibility of having to transport goods all across the country, truck drivers log many hours while on the road. Often at the expense of their own well being, truck drivers choose to drive longer than they should each day. Even though truck drivers are required to log their hours on the road so that inspectors can verify that proper safety procedures are being exercised, many truck drivers fail to report all of their miles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, "about a third of drivers interviewed by the Institute in 2003, 2004, and 2005 admitted to often or sometimes omitting hours from their log books." Truck drivers do this to make up lost time and make deliveries quicker, allowing them to take on more deliveries, increasing their take home pay.

Because truck drivers choose to drive longer than they should, many drivers are not nearly as well rested as they could be. As a result, truck drivers turn to stimulants to help keep themselves alert while on the road, although this tactic often backfires. The Institute for Highway Safety reported in 1995 that drug usage amongst truck drivers was even more prevalent than alcohol consumption, possibly representative of efforts to keep themselves awake and alert longer than their bodies would allow. "Almost 5 percent of truck drivers tested positive for illicit drug use, but only 0.2 percent tested positive for alcohol." Over-the counter stimulants "were present in 12 percent of truck drivers in an earlier Institute study." All in all, despite it being illegal for truck drivers to have a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.04 percent, as opposed to 0.08 percent for drivers of everyday passenger cars, many truck drivers consume alcohol and consume drugs, seriously putting everyone on the road at risk, potentially causing truck accidents due to drugs or alcohol that result in serious, life-altering injuries for motorists and even death.
